Driving Skills Screening
Is it still safe for me to drive? As people grow older that is a very good question to ask. Vision decreases, physical flexibility diminishes and reaction time slows as we age. Decisions about continuing, limiting or stopping driving should be made by consulting your doctor.
Doylestown Hospital offers a Driving Skills Screening to provide you with an assessment of some of your skills that are important for driving. The screening will check areas such as your distance vision, brake reaction time and visual scanning. Your doctor will receive a short, written report and we will provide you with information on additional resources for older adults who wish to continue driving.
The screenings are conducted by an Occupational Therapist in the outpatient therapy area at Doylestown Hospital. The cost of the screening is $75.00. Insurance does not cover this service.
The Doylestown Hospital Rehabilitation Center, in conjunction with MossRehab, offers sessions that assess a person's ability and readiness to return to driving following a change in medical condition. The driving program includes testing of vision and reaction time as well as an "on-the-road" assessment. Recommendations for adaptive equipment and driver's training may also be provided.
MossRehab conducts the driving tests twice a month at Doylestown Hospital Rehabilitation Center and a prescription from a physician is required. The driver evaluations are performed in specially adapted cars or vans. Although the cost of the service is not covered by insurance, a discount is offered to senior citizens.
