Professional Profile

Dr. Gratch specializes in orthopedic spine surgery. He became interested in orthopedics as a young man, influenced by his father, a family physician. Sidelined by a back injury he suffered while playing basketball, Dr. Gratch solidified his interest in spine surgery during medical school. He graduated with a medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, earning selection into the distinguished medical honor society, Alpha Omega Alpha, often thought of as the "Phi Beta Kappa for medical schools." He completed his residency training in orthopedic surgery at Temple University Hospital and trained in pediatric orthopedic surgery at Shriner's Hospital for Children in Philadelphia.  Dr. Gratch completed a successful fellowship in spinal surgery at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital in Houston, Texas. He is board certified in orthopedic surgery and holds membership in a number of professional organizations including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery and the North American Spine Society.

Dr. Gratch has presented at numerous professional meetings and is a published journal and book author. He served as the lead investigator in a pair of clinical trials and has presented community lectures on back pain.
Dr. Gratch has helped blaze the trail for minimally invasive spine fusion and minimally invasive approaches for non-fusion procedures. He and his colleagues have embraced technology to lead the way in minimally invasive spine surgeries. Honors awarded to Dr. Gratch include recognition in Philadelphia Magazine's Top Docs issue three times. In 2008, Dr. Gratch was named top surgeon in spine surgery by Main Line Today magazine.

Personal Profile

For Dr. Gratch, patient care includes understanding and involvement on the part of the patient. "It is important to have a patient participate and be a co-partner in their orthopedic spine care," he says. Dr. Gratch views Doylestown Hospital as a close-knit community that offers excellent subspecialty care as well as primary care. "I think it offers everything you could want in a community-based hospital," he says. He sees the future of Doylestown as a center for spine surgery in Bucks County, where Dr. Gratch grew up. He served as athletic director of Our Lady of Mount Carmel School for ten years. He coached basketball and baseball at Mt. Carmel for 15 years.
Dr. Gratch enjoys summers at the Jersey shore and being a spectator at his children's sporting events.
