Vestibular Rehabilitation at Doylestown Hospital

Vestibular rehabilitation is specialized physical therapy in the treatment of vertigo, dizziness, imbalance and falls. It is provided by an advanced clinician, trained and certified in vertigo and balance disorders

Vestibular rehabilitation must be ordered or prescribed by a physician.

The certified vestibular therapist will perform a thorough evaluation to evaluate a patient's vision, visual motor skills, balance, gait, overall range of motion or flexibility, strength and coordination. An individualized exercise-based program will be developed to meet the patient's needs and goals. This includes exercises in the physical therapy clinic, as well as home.

The overall goal of vestibular therapy is to retrain the brain or desensitize your symptoms by repeated exposure to the provoking stimulus. Doing this will allow the body to adapt and results in decreased vertigo and dizziness.

Vestibular rehabilitation can range from a few visits to 6-8 weeks depending on the vestibular condition and goals of patient.

The following conditions can benefit from Vestibular Rehabilitation:

  • Vertigo, Positional vertigo (BPPV)
  • Unilateral or Bilateral Vestibular Hypofunction
  • Labyrinthitis/Neuritis
  • Cervical vertigo
  • Post-whiplash Injury
  • Post-concussive Injury
  • Balance or Movement Disorders
