Stereotactic Breast Biopsy and Ultrasound

What if an exam or mammogram shows a lump?

If a lump in your breast requires further examination, your physician may order a breast biopsy.

Stereotactic Breast Biopsy

The Women's Diagnostic Center in Doylestown offers Stereotactic Breast Biopsy, a simple, non-surgical outpatient procedure which can determine if an abnormality is cancerous. Until recently, all breast biopsies were surgical procedures which required a trip to the operating room. Now, computerized imaging equipment allows radiologists and surgeons to perform the breast biopsy quickly and painlessly. Stereotactic breast biopsy is as accurate as traditional surgical biopsy, but it decreases the amount of tissue removed for diagnosis and minimizes any scarring to the breast.

Breast Ultrasound

Breast biopsies can also be performed utilizing ultrasound for guidance. This procedure is similar to the stereotactic biopsy. Ultrasound is used to find the lesion, and small pieces of the suspect tissue are removed.

Biopsy results will be given to you and your physician. If necessary, a plan of care will be developed by a team of physician specialists and nurse coordinators, to ensure that every aspect of your care is complete.
