Dr. Robert Handy specializes in joint replacement and sports medicine. He earned his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After graduating from medical school, Captain Robert W. Handy, MD launched a 14-year career in the United States Army. CPT Handy completed his Transitional Internship at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas in 1990. He attended flight surgeons school at Fort Rucker, Alabama and then served two years as a flight surgeon in the Republic of Korea.
Dr. Handy returned to El Paso for his orthopedic residency. He trained at both William Beaumont Army Medical Center and Thomason Hospital of the Texas Tech University Health System. While in Texas, he was promoted to the rank of Major. He next served four years as a general orthopedic surgeon in Heidelberg, Germany. He was a member of the 43rd MASH and served in the Balkans in Bosnia, Croatia and Kosovo. During his time in Europe, Dr. Handy completed an AO International Fellowship in Shoulder Surgery at St. George's Hospital in London.
As a Lieutenant Colonel, Dr. Handy undertook a yearlong fellowship in hip and knee replacement surgery at the Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. Following his fellowship he instructed orthopedic residents for two years at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington. While stationed in Washington State, Lt. Col. Handy commanded the 102nd Forward Surgical Team. He later deployed with his unit to Kandahar, Afghanistan. Dr. Handy separated from the Army in 2003 but served in the reserves for a few more years. He was promoted to the rank of Colonel prior to separation from the reserves.
Dr. Handy specializes in state-of-the-art arthroscopic surgery on shoulders and knees. Advances in arthroscopic instruments have allowed Dr. Handy to perform a wide array of procedures through minimally invasive incisions.

Dr. Handy is a native resident of Doylestown. He was born in Doylestown Hospital in July 1963. He continues to work with a number of local sports teams.
