MRI

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

MRI is primarily a medical imaging tool most commonly used in radiology to visualize the internal structure and function of the body. MRI provides much greater contrast between the different soft tissues of the body than computed tomography (CT) does, making it especially useful in neurological (brain), musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and oncological (cancer) imaging.

Unlike CT, it uses no ionizing radiation, but uses a powerful magnetic field to align the nuclear magnetization of (usually) hydrogen atoms in water in the body. Radiofrequency fields are used to systematically alter the alignment of this magnetization, causing the hydrogen nuclei to produce a rotating magnetic field detectable by the scanner. This signal can be manipulated by additional magnetic fields to build up enough information to construct an image of the body.  MRI is a relatively new technology, which has been in use for little more than 30 years.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a sophisticated diagnostic procedure that allows physicians' to look inside the body, without x-rays. MRI is one of the best non-invasive diagnostic tools, capturing the clearest possible pictures of the inner workings of the human anatomy. MRI technology uses magnetic fields and radiowaves to generate detailed computerized three dimensional images of many different parts of the body including the brain and spine, bones, joints, blood vessels, abdominal organs, chest and heart. It is also sensitive to soft tissue and provides detailed evaluations of lesions and tumors.

Each exam is tailored to answer specific questions about a patient's medical condition. The procedure time depends upon the area of the body being examined. Most MRI exams typically take 30 to 60 minutes. The procedure is safe and there is no radiation involved.

When the exam is complete, all images and information are examined by board certified MRI-subspecialty-trained radiologists. Results are usually available to the referring physician within two working days of the procedure.

- Most advanced MRI technology to date:
- Full range of advanced studies, providing physicians with detailed, cross-sectional images of the body.
- Fastest scan time available.
- Comfortably scans children and adults weighing up to 550 lbs.
- Open unit for claustrophobic patients

Before having an MRI

A physician's referral, as well as a valid insurance precertification are necessary to schedule an MRI. Patients are asked a series of questions to identify those who may not be able to receive an MRI. Patients with implanted medical devices containing ferrous metal (objects containing iron) can't be brought into the MRI Unit (e.g. pacemakers, cochlear implants, cerebral aneurysm clips, and prosthetic devices). Makeup should not be worn during an MRI, because certain mascaras and eyeshadows contain metal particles which could interfere with the scan.

Private dressing areas are available for changing. Valuable personal items can be stored in secure private lockers during appointments.

Unless instructed otherwise by your physician, follow your usual routine on the day your MRI is scheduled. Please arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment, so that any necessary paperwork can be filled out and that your questions about the MRI can be answered.
