May 2013 BRAVO Award
Kathy Nellett, RN, OCN, CBCN
Oncology Nurse Navigator
The Cancer Institute of Doylestown Hospital

Kathy Nellett grew up in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania and graduated from Springfield High School (Montgomery County). She attended Chestnut Hill College and School of Nursing, where she graduated as an RN. Kathy joined Chestnut Hill Hospital (where she was born!) as a nurse and worked there for 28 years. She was an infusion nurse for 15 of those years, and later worked as a clinical research nurse for Chestnut Hill's cancer program.

Kathy started working at Doylestown Hospital in 2007. Her position then was Breast Care Coordinator. She continues to be a resource and support for women who are having biopsies to determine if they have breast cancer. Her role has since expanded to Oncology Nurse Navigator, as she also assists lung cancer patients. She provides education, guidance, help with follow up and scheduling appointments and overall support and encouragement to her patients.

"I get to meet a lot of great, really interesting people," Kathy says. "I enjoy that one-on-one contact. It is a good feeling to know when people aren't sure what to do, you can help in any little way to make it easier." She says Doylestown Hospital is a "great place to work" and she feels fortunate to work with the team at The Cancer Institute.

Kathy facilitates the Breast Cancer Support group and is there for the group members whenever they need her. She has collaborated with Gilda's Club to provide educational programs for patients; she provides numerous community education programs for the Cancer Institute's genetics risk evaluation program.

According to Director of Cancer Services Karen Quinlan, RN, MSN, OCN: "Kathy is an extremely dedicated Associate who independently has grown and managed our Oncology Nurse Navigation position. She is a wealth of knowledge and is respected by physicians and Associates alike. Kathy has received many compliments from patients and families for her caring support and knowledge at a time in their life when they needed it most.

Kathy has a very positive outlook and is able to respond to newly diagnosed patients' needs and concerns while providing the much needed hope they are seeking. Kathy has a very kind, empathetic manner that puts patients at ease. She is extremely dedicated to her patients and our institution.

Kathy meets with each newly diagnosed patient, both men and women, and guides them through the maze of the healthcare system while comforting fears and providing hope. Kathy's 30 years in nursing have provided her with vast knowledge to perform the new role that she has accepted at Doylestown Hospital. She took it even further by applying to be one of the first to take the "Certified Breast Care Nurse" certification exams ever offered by the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation. Her willingness to go out of the box and accept this challenge certainly exemplifies the value Kathy places on her role at Doylestown Hospital, and most especially, our patients."

Kathy and her husband, Charles, have been married for nearly 34 years and live in Horsham. They have two children, Katie and Tim. Kathy enjoys reading and walks at least three miles every day. She is a passionate Phillies fan and enjoys several games a season at Citizens Bank Park. Kathy also loves going to the beach in Cape May, New Jersey.

Congratulations to an exceptional Associate!
